Overview

A stroke, a diagnosis of Parkinson's, a sudden facial palsy or a life hijacked by migraines and insomnia — neurological conditions can feel overwhelming. Modern neurology offers crucial emergency care and symptom management, but structured recovery and regeneration are often limited.

This is precisely where classical Kerala Ayurveda shines. For centuries the tradition has treated Vata-based disorders — which is exactly what most neurological conditions are — with a powerful repertoire of oil therapies, nasal treatments, medicated enemas and rejuvenation. Dr. Anil K Ayyappan combines this with structured modern-style rehab, yoga therapy and family involvement to help patients regain mobility, speech and independence.

The Ayurvedic view

All neurological disease in Ayurveda falls primarily under Vata vyadhi — disorders of the nervous-motor-sensory system. Treatment has four pillars: Snehana (internal and external oleation with medicated oils), Swedana (therapeutic sweating), Shodhana (Basti and Nasya — the two supreme treatments for Vata), and Rasayana (neuro-rejuvenation). Combined with targeted yoga and physiotherapy, the result is a deeply nourishing recovery path that addresses both the nerve and the person.

Conditions treated

  • Stroke recovery (ischemic & hemorrhagic)
  • Hemiplegia & paralysis (Pakshaghata)
  • Facial palsy (Bell's palsy — Ardita)
  • Parkinson's disease (Kampavata) — supportive care
  • Migraine & cluster headache (Ardhavabhedaka)
  • Chronic insomnia (Anidra)
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Sciatica & cervical nerve compression
  • Multiple sclerosis — supportive care
  • Anxiety & depression
  • Memory decline & early dementia
  • Post-head-injury recovery

Therapies & medicines we use

Shirodhara

Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil on the forehead — the signature Ayurvedic nervous-system therapy.

Nasya

Nasal medication — direct route to the brain, classical for facial palsy, migraine and stroke recovery.

Basti

Medicated enema — the definitive Ayurvedic treatment for Vata disorders including paralysis.

Pizhichil

Continuous warm-oil bath — rebuilds strength and mobility in paralysed limbs.

Shirovasti

Oil pooling on the head — powerful for facial palsy, migraine and insomnia.

Navara Kizhi

Rice bolus therapy — restores muscle tone and function in paralysed limbs.

Yoga therapy

Gentle, graded movement to restore function — essential alongside classical treatment.

Rasayana

Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Ashwagandha formulations — neuro-rejuvenation.

Expected timeline

Stroke rehab: visible improvements in 2–4 weeks, meaningful functional gains over 3–6 months, best outcomes if started within 3–6 months post-event. Facial palsy: often fully resolves in 3–6 weeks. Migraine: frequency and intensity reduce within 4–8 weeks. Parkinson's: noticeable symptom relief, better sleep and mood within 8–12 weeks of a structured programme.

“My father's stroke left his right side completely paralysed. Four weeks in Dr. Anil's care — Pizhichil, Navara Kizhi, Basti — and today he walks with a stick and eats on his own. We had almost lost hope.”

— Sreedevi Pillai, Alappuzha

Questions patients ask

How soon after a stroke should Ayurvedic rehab begin?
Once the patient is medically stable (usually 2–3 weeks after the event), Ayurvedic rehab can begin. Starting within the first 3–6 months gives the best results, but meaningful recovery is possible even 1–2 years later. We work closely with the treating neurologist throughout.
Can Parkinson's disease be cured?
Parkinson's cannot be cured by any system — but it can be meaningfully managed. Ayurvedic treatment consistently helps with rigidity, tremor, sleep, mood and quality of life. It complements, rather than replaces, your neurologist's care.
Is Shirodhara safe for the elderly?
Yes — it is one of the gentlest therapies we offer. Warm oil flowing on the forehead for 30–45 minutes is deeply calming and is often beautifully tolerated by elderly patients. Many describe it as the most relaxing experience of their life.
How long does migraine treatment take?
A focused 3–4 week IP programme, followed by 2–3 months of oral medicines, typically reduces attack frequency by 70–90%. Chronic daily migraine may need a second cycle after 6 months.
