Overview

Joint disorders — arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, cervical and lumbar spondylosis, sciatica, frozen shoulder, gout, knee pain — are among the most disabling and painful conditions modern patients face. Painkillers and steroids quiet the symptom for a while, but the disease continues to progress underneath. Ayurveda takes a fundamentally different view.

At our clinic, Dr. Anil K Ayyappan treats joint disorders with the full force of classical Kerala Ayurveda — detoxification, oil therapies, internal medicines, diet correction and structured yoga. Most patients see significant improvement within 4–8 weeks, and structural changes within 3–6 months.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda, joint disorders are primarily caused by an imbalance of Vata dosha and the accumulation of Ama — metabolic toxins that clog the joint channels. This combination produces pain, stiffness, inflammation and eventually structural damage. Classical treatment therefore has three arms: removing Ama from the body, pacifying vitiated Vata, and rebuilding the dhatus (tissues) of the joint itself. Ignoring any one of these is why many other treatments fail.

Conditions treated

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (Aamavata)
  • Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata)
  • Cervical spondylosis & neck pain
  • Lumbar spondylosis & low-back pain
  • Sciatica (Gridhrasi)

  • Knee pain & meniscus issues
  • Gout (Vatarakta)
  • Heel pain, plantar fasciitis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Post-injury joint stiffness
  • Fibromyalgia & muscle pain

Therapies & medicines we use

Abhyanga

Full-body medicated oil massage — warms the joints, improves circulation and loosens stiffness.

Janu Basti

Warm medicated oil held over the knee joint in a dough reservoir — deeply penetrating, classic for knee pain.

Kati Basti

The same technique for the lower back — relieves sciatica, lumbar spondylosis and disc issues.

Pizhichil

Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil over the body — a royal treatment for rheumatism.

Navara Kizhi

Bolus of medicated rice applied warm — strengthens muscles and joints.

Patra Pinda Sweda

Herbal-leaf bolus fomentation — excellent for inflammatory joint disease.

Virechana

Therapeutic purgation — removes deep-seated Pitta and Ama from the system.

Basti

Medicated enema — the single most effective treatment for Vata-based joint pain.

Expected timeline

Most patients experience meaningful pain reduction within 2–3 weeks of starting treatment. Stiffness and mobility improve over 4–8 weeks. Structural improvements — strengthening of tissues, reduction of inflammation — are typically visible over 3–6 months of a full programme. Severe or long-standing cases may benefit from a second cycle after 6 months.

“Seventy-two years old, couldn't climb stairs without stopping twice. Three weeks of Janu Basti and internal medicines from Dr. Anil — today I walk my grandson to school every morning.”

Questions patients ask

Can Ayurveda help if I've already been diagnosed with arthritis for years?
Yes. Even long-standing arthritis responds to Ayurvedic treatment, though the time needed depends on the damage already done. A structured 3–6 month programme of Panchakarma, internal medicines and lifestyle changes delivers meaningful relief in the vast majority of patients — including those who have relied on painkillers for decades.
Do I need to stop my current painkillers or medications?
No. We never ask you to stop anything abruptly. Your current medicines continue as prescribed while Ayurvedic treatment works in parallel. As your pain reduces and mobility returns, dosages are gradually tapered in consultation with your primary doctor.
Are the oil treatments safe for diabetic or elderly patients?
Absolutely. Therapies like Janu Basti and Kati Basti are gentle, externally applied and entirely safe for elderly and diabetic patients. Dr. Anil personalises the oil, temperature and duration for each patient's constitution.
Can I continue working during treatment?
Yes, in most cases. The outpatient programme runs for 60–90 minutes a day over 2–3 weeks. Many patients schedule it around work or take a short leave to combine treatment with rest — which deepens results.
