Overview
Joint disorders — arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, cervical and lumbar spondylosis, sciatica, frozen shoulder, gout, knee pain — are among the most disabling and painful conditions modern patients face. Painkillers and steroids quiet the symptom for a while, but the disease continues to progress underneath. Ayurveda takes a fundamentally different view.
At our clinic, Dr. Anil K Ayyappan treats joint disorders with the full force of classical Kerala Ayurveda — detoxification, oil therapies, internal medicines, diet correction and structured yoga. Most patients see significant improvement within 4–8 weeks, and structural changes within 3–6 months.
The Ayurvedic view
In Ayurveda, joint disorders are primarily caused by an imbalance of Vata dosha and the accumulation of Ama — metabolic toxins that clog the joint channels. This combination produces pain, stiffness, inflammation and eventually structural damage. Classical treatment therefore has three arms: removing Ama from the body, pacifying vitiated Vata, and rebuilding the dhatus (tissues) of the joint itself. Ignoring any one of these is why many other treatments fail.

Therapies & medicines we use
Full-body medicated oil massage — warms the joints, improves circulation and loosens stiffness.
Warm medicated oil held over the knee joint in a dough reservoir — deeply penetrating, classic for knee pain.
The same technique for the lower back — relieves sciatica, lumbar spondylosis and disc issues.
Continuous pouring of warm medicated oil over the body — a royal treatment for rheumatism.
Bolus of medicated rice applied warm — strengthens muscles and joints.
Herbal-leaf bolus fomentation — excellent for inflammatory joint disease.
Therapeutic purgation — removes deep-seated Pitta and Ama from the system.
Medicated enema — the single most effective treatment for Vata-based joint pain.
Expected timeline
Most patients experience meaningful pain reduction within 2–3 weeks of starting treatment. Stiffness and mobility improve over 4–8 weeks. Structural improvements — strengthening of tissues, reduction of inflammation — are typically visible over 3–6 months of a full programme. Severe or long-standing cases may benefit from a second cycle after 6 months.
