Why psoriasis patients across Thrissur travel south to Chalakudy

Psoriasis is, in classical Ayurveda, a Kushta-class skin disease — a deep, root-level dysfunction of Pitta and Rakta dhatu that surfaces through the skin. Topical creams (steroid or otherwise) suppress the surface. They do not address the underlying tissue-level imbalance that drives recurrence. This is why patients with 5-, 10-, even 20-year psoriasis often see complete control disappear weeks after they stop topical therapy.

The classical Ayurvedic approach is different — and it works. A complete Virechana-led Panchakarma protocol, supported by individualised internal medicines and a strict short-term diet correction, often produces sustained remission. Many of our long-term patients now go years without flare.

For Thrissur-district patients who have tried allopathic management without success, Abhaya Clinic in Chalakudy is roughly 30 minutes south of Thrissur town on NH-544 — and the clinical focus on chronic skin disease is one of the deepest in Kerala.

The treatment protocol — what to expect

Every patient is assessed individually. As a general structure, a complete psoriasis programme involves:

  • Initial consultation (45–60 min) — full Prakriti & Vikriti assessment, skin examination, history of triggers and previous treatments. You leave with a written plan and cost estimate.
  • Days 1–3 — Deepana & Pachana — digestive priming with bitter herbs before any oil is given internally.
  • Days 4–10 — Snehana — increasing doses of medicated ghee (chosen for your constitution) on an empty stomach. Critical step; never compressed.
  • Days 11–12 — Swedana & Virechana — external warming therapies, then the main purgation procedure.
  • Days 13–21 — Paschat karma — the carefully graded re-introduction of food. Most-skipped phase outside genuine clinics.
  • 3–6 month post-programme follow-up — internal medicines, diet continuation, and Rakta-stabilising Rasayanas to prevent recurrence.

Outpatient (you travel in daily from Thrissur) and residential (you stay on-site) formats are both available. Most Thrissur patients choose outpatient.

How to get to Abhaya Clinic from Thrissur

From Thrissur town: 30 km south on NH-544, approximately 45 minutes by road. Direct KSRTC and private bus services every 15 minutes. The clinic is 4 km from Chalakudy railway station and 25 km from Cochin International Airport. Free on-site parking.

Honest expectations

Not every patient achieves complete remission. We tell patients up-front what is realistic for their specific case. Most patients with chronic plaque psoriasis see 60–85% surface clearance after a complete programme, and a significant proportion go into sustained remission with continued internal medicines and lifestyle correction.
